Psalm 126

Updated: Nov 1, 2023

LORD, make us prosperous again, just as the rain brings water back to dry riverbeds. Psalms 126:4

I discovered something ponderable this morning.

We often quote the beloved Psalm 126 but in fragments. We quote verses 1,2 and 3, then quote verses 5 and 6 as occasions often demand.

We talk about God restoring our fortunes, and we're 'like them that dream'. We also talk about how those who sow in tears will return rejoicing... both passages are recurrent in church, especially during 'Testimony Time' after God has 'done it'.

But what I realized today as the Holy Ghost pointed out to me was that this Psalm was written in anticipation and not in harvest. This Psalm ought to be our confession not only at the time our fortunes have already been restored or at the time when we are returning with our sheaves in joy. This Psalm ought to be our confession right in the midst of the drought. Yes. When you read the often neglected verse 4 you realize that the psalmist and his tribe were in hard times.

He looked into his past and recalled the time God did 'great things for them' - Wow! It was like a dream. Then he said 'Lord do it again for us now'. Then he looked into the future and said when You do it again we will 'doubtless' come forth rejoicing.

Are you in a dry and thirsty place? Think back not on your woes but on that one or two times that God did something marvelous in your life. Then envisage what could be, after God restores you again.

With a memory and a hope like that, no present situation can hold you prisoner. Now that's how you bounce back to life.
