LET’S TALK ABOUT LIFE!

Be alert and think straight. Put all your hope in how God will treat you with undeserved grace when Jesus Christ appears

1 Peter 1:13 (Contemporary English Version)

Enough of the talk on Suicide and Depression already!

Now let’s talk about my favourite topic: Life.

Yayyyyyyyy!

Let’s talk about life, and why and how you must and should choose to focus on life and living rather than what is snuffing it out.

About a decade ago at Driving School, I watched a video that illustrated why it was important to focus on what you would rather hit or where you could quickly divert to, than on what you do not want to hit or jam (as we say in Nigeria) when faced with an emergency. Say a pedestrian did not ‘Stop, Look, Listen’ before crossing, or a child or an animal suddenly shows up a few feet away from you, or your brakes fail… Instead of fixating on the person and thinking ‘Oh No! I do not want to hit this person!’, you ought to look away and to an option of where else you could steer your car towards. The video proved that you would most likely knock down a target you did not intend to hit, as long as you’re focused on it. In split seconds you will be able to make a positive conscious decision rather than an unconscious one with negative consequences if you just choose to look away from the apparent problem and quickly scan for possible alternatives.

This simple yet effective rule I also apply in daily living. I do not focus on my issues; I look for ways to deal with them before they get out of hand, and when I can only do so little to save the day, I focus on what is ‘working’ in my life. Have you noticed that somehow, (I do not know how) while you’re brooding over issues, they increase or seem to increase in magnitude but when you choose to think on a solution they no longer appear as overwhelming as you first thought they were?

Life happens. Situations, mostly unexpected, buffet us now and then. I mean how do you explain these situations where child who was laughing at play in one minute is wailing and writhing on the floor in the next because he landed wrongly at his last jump or his playmate accidentally poked something in his eye… and the next hour his parents are with the doctor discussing how to save his life... Or how do you explain having fun in a football match and the next day being prepared for surgery because someone rammed their boots into your kneecap… Or how about a patient, careful and disciplined driver going jejely on his own who gets rammed into by an impatient, careless and undisciplined driver… How?… How do you explain a heavy downpour on your wedding day even though the Forecast said ‘light showers’… Or giving birth to a child with a health or mental challenge…

Child of God, life happens, but what we make of it - good, happy, sad, exciting, bland, sweet, sour, interesting, spicy, superb, boring, bitter, enthralling... is all up to us.

Ever watched any of those Cook Shows on TV? Sometimes all contestants are given the same set of ingredients but only one person wins. One person, who, in the Judges’ opinion, makes the best use of what they got. In the same vein my dear friend, what are you gonna make out of the pepper, tomatoes, onions, garlic, spaghetti, beef, chicken, salt, water, etc that life hands you?

Are the issues real? Yes. Can they be wished away? I wish. (LOL)

So here’s my simple maxim:

Life is a gift, but Living is a choice;

I accept Life and I choose to Live.

In my next post I will share with you some practical things I do (consciously) to get out of sad moods… and maybe you can add yours to the list.

Let’s talk about life and living.

For starters… just smile… right now. If you can do it in front of a mirror, great.

Smile to the left, smile to the right, smile up, smile down…. hahahahahaa…

Smile. Seriously…. just do it.

I care.
