If I Be a Man of God…

Elisha at the cave
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 1 Peter 5:10 (English Standard Version)

As Jesus hung pitiably on the cross on that memorable Friday, he was taunted by onlookers with a piercing challenge: “If you are indeed the son of God and the king of the Jews (like you claim), save yourself!… Did you not raise dead men back to life? Did you not heal long-standing diseases? Did you not cast out fuming demons? Did you not open blind eyes? Why then are you hanging on the cross and groaning like a helpless child? Messiah, save yourself!”

If you look back at your past you may recognize a point where you were faced with a similar ordeal – or maybe you are facing it now, otherwise it is somewhere in your future – because a deeper walk with God and a call to higher service will most likely take you there. It is a place where you will be able to do very little to help yourself out of a dilemma simply because it is the Father’s will for you to ‘go through’. You will carry a cross meant for a period and for that season it will seem like the weight of the world is crashing down on you. You will know it would not last forever; that it is just a phase, but the load at that time will be almost unbearable you will want to throw the cross away and run far from it. You will struggle and beat against the waters that seem to be drowning you but the harder you will fight, the more you will seem to be sinking until you will get to the point where you will let go and trust God to bring you out, in His time.

Jesus cried out “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” because at that point, the Saviour felt the weight on him was just too much and he felt so all alone. Your prayers of faith have healed the sick yet you now are battling with an ailment and it seems God can no longer recognize your voice. You are koboless, even though you had prophesied financial breakthroughs for others and seen the manifestation in their lives. You pastor a successful ministry for women and they are giving birth to their babies yet, you’re still in the line, waiting for your own child. You minister to broken homes and see couples get back together but your marriage is heading for the rocks despite all efforts you have put into making it work…. Hold on my brother; don’t take the easy way out my sister.

They sneered: ‘If you are the Christ..…’ but Jesus didn’t need to prove his claim to them – the miracles he performed before were enough. It was now time for God to take the glory even if it meant deep agony for him. Even though his experience contradicted his confession, he wasn’t compelled to prove anything to anyone anymore. He would have worked in the flesh to do that and it would have tampered with God’s eternal design. Jesus Christ wasn’t totally helpless on the cross. He had the option of calling down angels, but he chose to please his father instead. Dear friend, the situation is mocking: ‘If you are really a child of God…..’ but just keep serving, keep believing, keep trusting, keep waiting, keep praying. Don’t get frantic trying to prove you are a man of God and that you have the power to move mountains, you will only be walking by sight and antagonizing the master-plan.

The second thief saw what the others did not see. He said, “Lord, remember me WHEN you come into your kingdom”. Note that he didn’t say ‘IF’. This man knew that in spite of the mockery, pain, anguish and all what Jesus was experiencing, he still had a kingdom. He knew that even though he was going through crucifixion, his kingdom was untouched. This peculiar criminal knew that even though Jesus was dying shamefully on earth, a glorious paradise still awaited him. He knew what the writer of Hebrews later expounded – that Jesus was enduring the cross for the sake of the glory ahead. The jeering crowd and the mocking soldiers didn’t see that, neither did the disappointed thief. They were only focused on the natural; they paid no attention to the supernatural. The cross lasted but for a few hours, the succeeding glory lasts forever.

You are not a failure. God has not rejected you. You are only experiencing birth pains which you will forget once your baby emerges. Think about Elijah, Job, Hannah, Paul, Ruth, John, Daniel, Esther, Abraham, Peter, etc. They are your ‘great cloud of witnesses’. If they survived their tests and trials, you bet you will come out glorious. Remember you have nothing more to prove – let your God take the glory. Having done all to stand (having fulfilled your part), keep standing.

You can live again. You should.
