Get BACK Into the Ring!

Ali above Foreman in the 'Rumble in the Jungle', 1974. (thesweetscience.com)

Ever heard about The Rumble in the Jungle? I didn’t know about it until the Spirit of God whispered into my ears one day “Get Back into the Ring!” At that time a recurrent challenge was wearing me out and I was thinking of just throwing in the towel, so after I heard that directive, I browsed the internet to learn a few things about the game of boxing. It was in the process I discovered this historical fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire; the ‘Fight of the Century’.

Naturally George Foreman ought to have won. He was younger, more muscular and a reigning champion. Muhammad Ali had failed to get back his title at that time (he didn’t lose it in a fight though) and was about 7 years older than Foreman, but he won the fight. I have watched highlights from that fight and I tell you I’ve learnt a few tips for the New Year.

Change your technique. Prior to this fight, Ali’s fighting style emphasized movement as he countered his opponent, but for Foreman he ‘invented’ a new technique, one he later called the ‘rope-a-dope’. Eventually, a few well-targeted punches at a tired Foreman were all it took to knock him down and out. If your modus operandi isn’t yielding the required result, you may need to adjust, upgrade or change it altogether. The Holy Spirit is your guide.

Faith your fears to death. Ali didn’t stay quiet throughout the match; he fought with his words as well. Even when George Foreman struck him with his hardest punches that should have knocked him out, He asked “That all you got, George?” When fears taunt you, speak faith words. Don’t ever let the situation be the last voice in your head.

Maximize your ‘rest’ period. Boxers get only 60 seconds between rounds, to rest. They are offered water or an approved electrolyte drink; their sweat is dabbed off and most importantly, their coaches speak to them. Hey! Get into the spirit, receive respite. You cannot keep fighting and fighting. Get some Word into your spirit; get some encouragement from fellowship with other believers. Get some Holy Ghost massage via a fast; sing spiritual songs, pray in the Holy Ghost; hear God per time so you can know what your next move should be.

Get back into the ring. The match lasted 8 good rounds. Professionally, Championship bouts can take up to 12 rounds while non-championship fights range from 4 to 10 rounds. Each round lasts 3 minutes with a minute break in between. Perhaps the reason you’re in that struggle this long is because it’s a title fight. You need to get a shot at your heavyweight title belt therefore you cannot afford to quit after only 4 rounds. Get back into the ring! Was 2015 distasteful, stressful and totally unrewarding? Life may have dealt you several hard punches, but you are still here, still breathing, still living. Muhammad Ali won that fight 2 minutes before the end of the 8th round. I think you’ve still got time.

Once the whistle blows again (you will know when it sounds), you get yourself back into that ring and fight until you win; even if you have to go all 12 rounds!

You will win.
